Laboratory Technician I (Salaried) - Koppel, PA  

 

LOCATION: Koppel - Pennsylvania  - USA 

DEPARTMENT: QUALITY 

 

Purpose:


Provides expert knowledge and technical support in the metallographic laboratory. Performs metallographic specimen preparation, examination, and testing to support steel manufacturing quality control and metallurgical investigations. Ensures accurate and reliable microstructural analysis results that contribute to process improvement and product conformity with internal and industry standards. The position also ensures that all laboratory operations are conducted safely, accurately, and efficiently, in accordance with internal standards, applicable regulations, and quality system requirements.

Main Responsibilities:

 

  • Oversee and perform daily operations within the metallographic laboratory, including preparation, mounting, polishing, etching, and microscopic examination of steel.
  • Conduct metallographic and failure analyses using optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and other metallographic techniques to evaluate microstructure, grain size, decarburization, inclusions, and surface conditions. 
  • Prepare detailed test reports and maintain traceable records of analyses and results. Support the Quality Department by developing and updating Power BI dashboards and SharePoint/PowerApps tools for reporting and activity tracking within Quality North.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory operational documents including Local Procedures, Operative Practices, and related forms. Ensure all documents comply with internal and external quality standards (API, ASTM, ISO).
  • Work closely with Operations and Metallurgy/VECO teams to synchronize laboratory activities, maximize efficiency, and provide technical input for process and product improvement.
  • Protects from damage, theft or misuse the facilities, equipment and other physical resources assigned to his/her area.
  • Complies with Tenaris policies, procedures and management standards, and ensures adherence with all laws and regulations that apply to the area of responsibility.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

  • 3+ years of experience in metallography or material testing (microscopy, SEM, grinding, polishing, etc.) 3+ years’ experience in a manufacturing quality environment
  • Experience generating Power BI dashboards and managing SharePoint with PowerApps integration
  • Knowledge of tensile, impact, hardness, and collapse tests
  • Experience managing external suppliers and procurement processes (contracts, PRs, POs)
  • Familiarity with API, ASTM, and ISO standards
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Self-driven, capable of independent decision-making within defined scope
  • Effective communicator and team collaborator
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and networked computer systems
  • Demonstrated leadership in task coordination and prioritization
