Laboratory Technician I - Koppel, PA  

 

LOCATION: Koppel - Pennsylvania  - USA 

DEPARTMENT: QUALITY 

 

Purpose:

Provide technical expertise and operational leadership for the metallographic, chemical, and mechanical laboratory at the Koppel facility. The role ensures reliable laboratory operations, accurate specimen preparation and testing, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications. It also supports production and quality functions by delivering timely, accurate analysis, maintaining laboratory equipment, and driving continuous improvement in laboratory performance and reporting systems.

 

Main Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee daily operations of the Koppel laboratory, including metallographic, chemical, mechanical, and raw material testing activities.
  • Perform specimen preparation and laboratory testing in accordance with applicable internal procedures, industry standards, and customer specifications.
  • Operate and maintain advanced laboratory equipment, including Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), spectrometers, and mechanical testing systems.
  • Conduct metallographic analysis and failure investigations to support product quality, process improvement, and root cause analysis.
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of chemical analysis for steel and slag in close coordination with Melt Shop operations.
  • Collaborate with Operations (Melt Shop, Ambridge, Heat Treatment, NDT) and Quality teams to align laboratory activities with production priorities and quality requirements.
  • Analyze, validate, and report test results, ensuring compliance with specifications and applicable standards.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory documentation, including procedures, work instructions, forms, and operational practices.
  • Support Quality reporting and digitalization initiatives, including development and maintenance of Power BI dashboards and SharePoint/Power Apps solutions.
  • Manage interaction with external suppliers, including defining scope of work, service acceptance, and supporting procurement processes (PR/PO).
  • Ensure compliance with API, ASTM, ISO, safety regulations, and internal company policies.
  • Complies with Tenaris policies, procedures and management standards, and ensures adherence with all laws and regulations that apply to the area of responsibility.
  • Protects from damage, theft or misuse the facilities, equipment and other physical resources assigned to his/her area.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of metallographic and materials characterization techniques (microscopy, SEM, grinding, polishing, microstructural analysis).
  • Strong understanding of mechanical testing methods (tensile, hardness, impact, collapse testing).
  • Knowledge of chemical analysis techniques, including spectrometry for steel and slag evaluation.
  • Familiarity with API, ASTM, and ISO standards.
  • Understanding of manufacturing and Quality Management Systems (3+ years experience).
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong ability to develop, interpret, and communicate technical data and laboratory results.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data reporting tools, including Power BI and SharePoint/Power Apps.
  • Ability to manage suppliers, contracts, and procurement-related processes (PR/PO).
  • Effective collaboration and communication skills across technical and operational teams.
  • Self-driven with the ability to make independent decisions within defined scope.
  • Demonstrated leadership in coordinating laboratory activities and resources.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced industrial environment with multiple operational priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage laboratory workflows, documentation, and compliance requirements.
